The Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River which is also known as “King Bend” in local parlance. It’s really difficult to find a place that is shallower than this. Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats are what remains of the prehistoric lake that covered this area around 14,500 years ago. Nowadays it’s home to Speed Week, which takes place every year in mid-August, during which racers strive to break speed records on land.
The flats can get incredibly hot in the summer (up to 37 ° C), so you might want to stay away during this time of year and watch them in the spring or fall.
