The best way to get to Tribeca is by subway, or on foot from SoHo, Lower Manhattan, or Greenwich Village. Take the Subway Line 1 to Chambers Street.

TriBeCa and its History

Next to the Financial District, the hip Soho district and the lively Chinatown is the “Triangle Below Canal” (Tri-Be-Ca). Canal Street to the north, West Street to the east, Broadway to the west, and Vesey Street to the south form the imaginary boundaries of the district.

Looking at the old industrial buildings and cobblestone streets, it’s hard to believe that this is one of the most popular residential areas for New York families. In the past, you mainly found one thing here: the textile industry! You can still see former advertising signs on the old building today.

Similar to the Soho district, with the retreat of industry in the 1970s, artists and creatives came to Tribeca. Over the years, the former industrial district has developed into a hotspot among New York’s wealthy and celebrities.

New York’s Most Expensive Zip Code

10013 is the zip code, called Zip Code in the USA, of the top earners. In addition to the high density of celebrities, only those who can afford the very expensive rents live here. The average price per square foot has increased eightfold in recent years and in 2013 was just under $ 1,800.

Living in Tribeca is delightful, there are many very good schools, beautiful kindergartens, and great parks. Due to its ideal location on the Hudson River, Tribeca is very suitable for walks and outdoor sports activities, and the 290 restaurants (!) Tribeca is within walking distance and offers great opportunities for going out.

The Cast Iron buildings have their charm and the luxury residential complexes built directly on the Hudson offer everything the affluent New York family needs. One of the visual highlights is the so-called “Jenga Tower” – just like the board game. The tower actually reminds you a bit, doesn’t it?

The list of prominent residents is long: Jay-Z and Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Maria Carey, Leonardo Di Caprio, Taylor Swift, Adriana Lima, Justin Timberlake, and Jessica Biel, and of course the founders of the Tribeca Film Festivals and Actors Robert De Niro are part of the Tribeca community.

Historically Significant Buildings

When strolling through Tribeca, the special, sometimes centuries-old architecture is immediately noticeable.

There are some buildings in the small town that you should definitely see: The Textile Building was designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh and built-in 1901. The neo-renaissance style immediately catches the eye.

At 105 Hudson Street, you will find the Powell Building (1898), which was designed by Carrere and Hastings. It is one of the most imposing buildings in Tribeca. On the lower floor, there is also the Nobu restaurant by, of course: Robert De Niro.

Towards the end of the Civil War, a few more buildings were built on 73 Worth Street, which is also from the Neo-Renaissance. You can admire a very impressive Art Deco motif on 140 West Street at the New York Telephone Company building. Built-in 1896 and designed by William B. Tubby, the American Thread Building at 260 West Broadway (corner of Beach Street) is a former wool warehouse and now a popular office and residential building in Tribeca.

The Tribeca Film Festival

In order to bring life back to the residential area close to Ground Zero, Robert De Niro created the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 together with producer Jane Rosenthal.

New York City suffered badly from the attacks of September 11, 2001, and Di Niro intended to help New Yorkers out of this deep-seated depression and give them a reason to celebrate again with the creation of the festival.

They all come to the Tribeca Film Festival, the big names in the film industry, and all of Lower Manhattan is in a state of emergency during these spring days. In addition to various awards, film premieres, and short film presentations, there is also a show program with music and chic after-show parties that are well worth seeing every year.

The Tribeca Film Center (375 Greenwich Street) was also born out of Robert De Niro’s ideas and creativity. The Film Center is a film community that brings together the film industry and everyone who works in it.

One Night with Robert De Niro

Here, too, Robert De Niro has his fingers in the game. The Greenwich Hotel in the heart of Tribeca belongs to the neighborhood’s secret ruler. 88 luxurious rooms and a few perfectly furnished suites, as well as three penthouses, can be booked here.

During the film festival, the stars and starlets spend the night here in the hotel built in the style of an Italian country house.

The building looks as if it were many years old, but De Niro had it built from scratch on a parking lot. With old, hand-formed bricks that came from the inventory of a disused brick factory near Pennsylvania, the hotel looks bulky and weathered. You get the night from $ 550. The attached, of course, Italian restaurant Laconda Verde, offers the first-class cuisine from the chef Agostino Sciandri, with a wine list that is impressive.
