Hundreds of new restaurants are opened in the city every year. Despite the almost unmanageable selection, many locals often stick to a handful of restaurants. A detour to one of these popular culinary landmarks gives you an excellent impression of the city’s diverse gastronomic scene and its local culture – without having to spend huge amounts of money.
Simple, cheap, authentic, delicious. Breakfast at Tina’s Place.
We opened this breakfast bar in the middle of Bushwick. It should be cheap, typically American breakfast. With pancakes, free refill of coffee, and stained newspapers on the counter.
We found exactly that with Tina. Between the last night owls, construction workers, and many locals, we squeezed into a much too small shop. But that has to be the case and somehow belongs to it.
Don’t expect fancy hipster bowls or caramel-flavored latte macchiatos here. Everything is more basic here. Scrambled eggs with sausages, pancakes with maple syrup, and sausages with fried eggs. There was also black coffee, and there wasn’t even any plant-based milk. If that still doesn’t deter you, Tina has a solid foundation for z. B. a walking street art tour of Bushwick.

At the end of Brooklyn, in the Red Hook waterfront, you’ll find the Hometown BBQ. Unfortunately, it has not been an insider tip since it appeared on national TV, but this barbecue paradise has not yet appeared in most travel guides.
Here you get the best spare ribs we have ever eaten. We took over something and shared a whole rack for two. There was also mac cheese, Hometown Slaw, beans, and potato salad. Everything is of excellent quality and tastes unique.
Unfortunately, you cannot make reservations at the Hometown BBQ. Here you have to stand in line, order, get a number, and pick up food at the bar. Especially on weekends when the Hometown BBQ is playing live music, it gets incredibly crowded. Coming early is worth it, plan enough waiting time.
A little hint: to the Hometown BBQ it’s best to take an Uber or the bus. Unfortunately, there is no subway here. The advantage of the location is that very few tourists get lost here.

America is the paradise of sumptuous breakfast plates. Everything is a bit bigger, that’s fun for a while, but at some point, you long for the old-fashioned. It was the same for us in New York. The day came when we just wanted a yogurt with fruit, normal bread, and a really good coffee.
Since the hipster breakfast spots started popping up, you have a lot more choice and you get a breakfast based on the European model. A few years ago the only place where this was possible was Le Pain Quotidien.
Fresh croissants and yogurt with fruit at Le Pain Quotidien.
What began in Belgium found its way to New York in 1997. To this day, you can still eat sourdough bread, delicious croissants, hearty breakfast variations, and sweet cakes at Le Pain Quotidien. There are now numerous branches in New York and therefore one near you. Not a must-do, but certainly a good starting point for the day.

The bakery has three branches in New York. But we would recommend everyone to visit the original in Brooklyn.
Dessert dreams have come true here since 1929. According to an old family recipe, “The World’s Most Fabulous Cheesecake” is baked here. In the self-test, we were literally struck by it. It’s definitely not a small piece of cake in the afternoon, more like a whole meal.
Inside the restaurant, everything is typically American-style. The interior is red and white and everything was getting on a bit when we visited. But that doesn’t detract from the whole thing and only makes the experience even more authentic. Between families celebrating family celebrations, we sat on funny chairs and spooned huge Sundae cups, and admired countless pieces of cake on tablets.
