The exterior of the New York State Capitol
The New York State Capitol is located on State Street Hill in Albany and has served as the state seat of government since the 1880s. Built by five architects over a period of 32 years, the building is a wonderful example of late 19th-century architecture. Free guided tours and independent audio tours of the building are offered. There are numerous shops, restaurants, and hotels in the immediate vicinity.
The building was completed in 1899. Each of the architects involved had its own style. This can be seen in many details, but surprisingly, all the different influences ultimately form a harmonious unit. I was particularly impressed by the hand carvings, which, as our tour guide explained to me, were made by craftsmen from England, Ireland, and Scotland.

The great thing about the Capital-Saratoga Region is its unique blend of picturesque scenery and the ubiquity of American history. Next on my agenda was the Saratoga Battlefield in the Saratoga National Historical Park. I explored the ten stations on the former battlefield on my own. Today nature has reclaimed this place, and luckily there has not been any fighting here for a long time! Then it went north towards the Saratoga Monument and Victory Woods. Victory Woods was the last encampment of the British army before the surrender to the American forces on October 17, 1777. How do you say that? The rest is history.

In the Village of Schuylerville, I toured the Schuyler House, where General Philip Schuyler lived in 1777. There are also many other historic buildings in the area that are worth visiting.
Victory Woods was the last encampment of the British Army before the surrender to American forces on October 17, 1777. The British Army was only able to hold the camp for seven days before being forced to surrender. Many historians believe that the Battle of Saratoga and this surrender of the British marked the turning point in the American Revolutionary War.

Go aboard the Dutch Apple II for a scenic tour of the Hudson River. The 1986 ship is reminiscent of the popular “Dayliners” that used to carry passengers between ports along the Hudson River – from Albany to New York City. The journeys are accompanied by a historian who gives an impressive account of the history of the area and provides information about sights along the way. Round trips take about an hour and a half, a bar and snacks are available for cash.
