It’s not an island, but it could well be one. The state has countless rivers and lakes, with almost limitless opportunities for adventure in, on, or around the water.
Fly fishing isn’t the only type of fishing in New York, but it is certainly one of the most popular in the mountainous areas of the state.
The Finger Lakes and Great Lakes regions feature perch, salmon, pikeperch, and various species of trout. Fly fishing for black bass, trout, and rock bass in the Hudson, Delaware, Saint Lawrence, Niagara, and Mohawk Rivers, and in the Catskill Mountains (the birthplace of fly fishing) is great fun. In winter, ice fishing is a more unusual and exciting alternative.

With more than 30,000 miles of streams and rivers, not to mention the 3,000 lakes and ponds, the Adirondack Mountains are a paradise for paddlers of all skill levels. The Saint Regis Canoe Area is the state’s only dedicated canoe park and offers a variety of paddling opportunities. For experienced kayakers looking for a real adrenaline rush, the Opalescent River is a great tip.
The best way to enjoy the waters of New York is on a rented or chartered sailboat.
Did you know that New York State has island castles? On a tour of the Saint Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands, you can discover the fantastic castles of Singer Castle and Boldt Castle. Nearby, the Antique Boat Museum invites you to take trips in old ships. Further south you can rent a boat for a few days and explore the famous Erie Canal. Camping in western New York is great at Lake Erie State Park. And at the same time, you let your soul dangle on a sailing boat.

Get up close and personal with the famous Niagara Falls on the Maid of the Mist tour.
Wherever you are in New York State, a trip to Niagara Falls is a must. On the Maid of the Mist boat tour, you will experience the misty, steaming waters of the Horseshoe Falls up close. On the Hurricane Deck at the Cave of the Winds you hear, see, and feel the roaring violence of the Bridal Veil Falls. For an extreme whitewater experience, take a jet boat tour through the rapids and whirlpools of the Whirlpool Rapids of the Niagara River.

In less than an hour, you can get from the boundless energy of New York City to the quiet sandy beaches of a coastal town. Long Island’s beaches offer plenty of activities, from diving and surfing to camping and strolling on the beach. Both Coopers Beach and Main Beach are known across the country as two of the best beaches in the United States. The world-famous Hamptons impress with fashionable shops and restaurants, and the Montauk Point Lighthouse impresses with breathtaking views. So many different stretches of the coast – there really is something for everyone.
With an enchanting view of the Finger Lakes, you can enjoy good wine on the safe mainland.
If you prefer to stay dry while looking at the water itself, a tour through the Finger Lakes wine-growing region and a glass of Riesling while watching the sunset over the lakes are ideal. You can also walk twenty stories above the river at lofty heights on the walkway over the Hudson River, which is the longest elevated walkway in the world at 2 km. At Lake George, Otsego Lake, or Chautauqua Lake, beautiful lakeside towns invite you to linger. You can also explore the towns, villages, and things to do along the 835 km long Great Lakes Seaway Trail, a scenic route of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
By plane, you can reach New York State via the airport’s John F. Kennedy International in New York City and Newark International in New Jersey. In less than an hour, you can reach Long Island MacArthur, Stewart International, Albany International, Syracuse Hancock International, Greater Rochester International, and Buffalo Niagara International, which are your starting points to other destinations throughout the state. The Amtrak trains, rental cars, or a combination of these also open up the state to you.
