AccuWeather forecasts between 17 and 21 inches of snow for New York City this winter, a significant increase from last year’s less than 13 inches. The prediction suggests potential storm systems from western Canada could bring snow as early as December.

Meteorologists at AccuWeather have released their winter snow forecast for New York City, predicting a potentially more intense snow season compared to last year. Paul Pastelok, Lead Long-Range Meteorologist, warns that storm systems from western Canada might bring snow as early as December, just before the holiday season.

The current forecast indicates NYC will experience between 17 and 21 inches of snowfall, compared to the less than 13 inches recorded last winter. While this is still below the city’s average winter snowfall of 29.8 inches, Pastelok notes that the numbers could be conservative.

“Our forecast numbers for New York City are conservative right now, but we’re still watching out for the potential for it to be a higher impact season,” Pastelok stated.

The meteorologist also highlighted a potential “intense cold blast” that could travel from the middle of the country to the East Coast in early February. This could lead to more storms and potential travel disruptions.

For context, while New York City anticipates 17-21 inches, nearby Buffalo is expected to be hit much harder, with forecasts predicting 90 to 100 inches of snow.
