«The Great Gatsby» directed by Baz Lurmann is not the first film adaptation of one of the most famous works by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. The first film based on the novel was made in 1926, only a year after the book itself was released. Alas, it is impossible to watch this silent movie today: the film with 80 minutes of tape was lost, a poster and a couple of shots remained.
For the second time «The Great Gatsby» was filmed in 1949. However, Paramount Studios failed – the painting was ignored by both critics and spectators. The role of Daisy in the failed film was played by Betty Field (originally read by famous actress Jean Tierney, but the producers found her «too beautiful»).
