A part of the 3 million objects that the New York banker, Georg Gustav Heye, collected from the lives of the American Indians is shown here. The former U.S. Customs House on the southern tip of Manhattan displays pottery, carpets, and pictures of the Indians on two floors.

On the trail of German and Austrian art, you can discover a lot here: The first floor is dedicated to Austrian art of the early 20th century with works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka, among others. The second floor deals with the German, predominantly Expressionist, the art of that era. Impressive works by Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix, and Wassily Kandinsky are just an excerpt from the treasures of the new gallery.

The New Museum of Contemporary Art is worth a visit for its architecture alone. Its contemporary art exhibitions are among the best in the world. The building of the “New Museum of Contemporary Art” founded in 1977 was designed by the Japanese architecture firm SANAA and is already one of the most beautiful New York buildings.

The New York Fire Department Museum is fittingly located in a former fire station. It’s in the middle of Soho and you can’t miss it, as you can see from the pictures. Spread over three floors, the beginnings of the fire department in New York are shown, from small medals, stories, and anecdotes to entire fire engines.

Shelley and Donald Rubin from New York have been collecting Buddhist art, mandalas, and meditation images here for three decades. The exhibitions of contemporary Asian artists are very impressive.
