Nothing beats delis in New York. These are not like the delicatessen shops or even delicatessen shops you can know from other countries. No, delis are simple, mostly offer relatively normal cuisine, such as sandwiches, burgers, bagels, and baked goods, very often have a small supermarket integrated and are mostly under Jewish management.

Jewish in that New York has welcomed many Jewish immigrants throughout its rich history, dating back to the 1800s. The first deli opened in New York in 1885. We’re big fans of typical New York delis, so we’ve rounded up our favorites in this article.

Mile End Delicatessen

Try something delish

With two locations in New York (Manhattan & Brooklyn), the Mile End Delicatessen is an absolute insider tip. Opened by husband and wife team Noah Bernamoff (a Canadian) and Rae Cohen (a New Yorker), they brought to New York the typical Jewish cuisine they both knew from their grandma’s childhood.

There is also a touch of Canadian specialties that make the Mile End Deli so special. The food is high quality, completely kosher, and incredibly delicious. Our recommendation: the pastrami burger and the grated cookies.

Katz’s Delicatessen

Katz’s Delicatessen has been a New York institution since 1888 and attracts numerous visitors every day. Not only because the world-famous “orgasm scene” from Harry and Sally was filmed here, but also because Katz’s is simply one of the best delis in New York.

The pastrami sandwich is unmistakable.

Katz’s Delicatessen is priced well above the average for other delis in New York. The queue can easily add up to an hour of waiting. Is it all worth it? If you really want to eat at Katz’s, you should put up with it.

Pastrami Queen on the Upper East Side

Upper East Side is waiting for you

Another must-go-to deli in New York is Pastrami Queen on the Upper East Side. The Pastrami Queen has been an integral part of the New York food scene for over 30 years. The large selection also makes the Pastrami Queen so special. There are almost 20 different toppings for your sandwich to choose from.

Frankel’s Delicatessen

Frankel Delicatessen in Greenpoint

Zach and Eric Frankel have been running this deli in Greenpoint since 2016. Inspired by grandmother’s recipes, Frankel’s Delicatessen serves the most delicious dishes from Jewish cuisine. We tried the pastrami egg sandwich and loved it. So if you are in Williamsburg and the surrounding area, be sure to stop by here. It’s not for nothing that Frankel’s is one of the best delis in New York.
