New York is a booming city. You can experience a lot, but if you want to see nature, then you have to drive a few kilometers further to be able to take a closer look at the most beautiful sides of the country. You can also rent a package tour by bus, which starts early in the morning and ends late in the evening. However, you can also go by train.

The distance from New York to Niagara Falls is 655 freeway kilometers, which is approximately a 7.5-hour drive. An alternative if you want to avoid bus tours and trains would be to rent a car. The roads in the USA are all very well developed. Unfortunately, there is not much to see left and right of the Autobahn. However, so that it doesn’t get boring while on vacation, there is an alternative route that is a lot longer, but also more stimulating, because it includes numerous sights and museums in the states of New York and Pennsylvania. The South Route

The first highlight of the southern tour is Scranton, an old mining town on the Lackawanna River. If you happen to drive through here, you should also plan a stop, because the largest railway museum in the USA is located here. “Union Pacific Big Boy”, the legendary steam locomotive of the USA is only one of the well-known pieces in the museum.

The journey then continues to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Located 2 km from the town of Ansonia. The gorge is a natural wonder of the last Ice Age and has dug into the high rock massifs. The route then continues via Corning, which is located in the state of New York.

The glass-making site on the Chemung River is of course known for its various glasses and associated museum, which introduces you to glass-making. The journey continues through Letchworth State Park, one of the most impressive parks in the state. The final highlight of the southern route in Buffalo, the second-largest city in upstate New York. Here you can visit the Buffalo Museum of Science, which is not only a highlight for adults, but also for children. From Buffalo, Niagara Falls is only 35 kilometers away.

The North Route

Genesee Country Village & Museum

If you take the north route from the falls back to New York, you will definitely pass the Genesee Country Village & Museum, which is only a few kilometers from Mumford and is one of the most important open-air museums in the USA. In 68 houses you can be taken back to the 19th century.

You should also make a detour to Rochester. The big city has numerous sights to offer, but you have to deviate about 1.5 hours from the route to be able to see all of it.

Hyde Park in autumn

We continue via Canandaigua, a charming small town on a lake of the same name, and the racing town of Watkins Glen to Ithaca. There are a few more waterfalls to see here before continuing via the town of Hyde Park to New York City, to your starting point. The tour promises many highlights and wonderful experiences.
